Episode 4 (Season 2) – Faith, Sevice, and Scholarship with Rachel Gaura

Bulldog Mindset Podcast: A Conversation with Rachel Gaura, Tucker Scholar

This week on The Bulldog Mindset, I had the joy of sitting down with Rachel Gaura, a junior psychology major from Chapin, South Carolina, and one of Gardner-Webb’s distinguished Tucker Scholars. Rachel’s story is one of faith, resilience, leadership, and service…..and it was a privilege to give her a platform to share it in her own words.

Articulating the Student Experience

What stands out most about Rachel is her ability to articulate her journey with clarity and authenticity. From the moment she described how she first set foot on campus and knew Gardner-Webb was home, it was clear she had a deep sense of calling. That sense of clarity is matched by her ability to reflect meaningfully on the challenges and joys she’s experienced, something not every student can do with such ease.

She doesn’t just tell her story; she connects it to the broader student experience, making her voice one that other Bulldogs can see themselves in.

A Scholar, Leader, and Mentor

Rachel’s path to becoming a Tucker Scholar is inspiring. In high school, she was deeply involved in service, leadership, and academics, eventually being selected from nearly 200 applicants to receive the University’s most prestigious scholarship. As one teacher put it, she embodies “a heart for Jesus that reaches out to those around her, a soul nurtured by the Word, a mind gifted with discernment, and strength found in her faith.

But what makes Rachel remarkable isn’t just her recognition; it’s how she lives it out. She leads a women’s Bible study, serves as a peer leader for UNIV 111, tutors, and works in Admissions, where she’s often the first face prospective students meet. In every one of these roles, she demonstrates the same qualities: warmth, encouragement, and an ability to make others feel like they belong.

As she shared on the podcast, “Meeting people where they’re at has been one of the biggest lessons for me at Gardner-Webb. Every student’s story is different, and I’ve grown so much learning how to support them right where they are.

Faith, Resilience, and Community

Rachel also spoke candidly about challenges, including the sudden loss of her grandfather just before returning to campus. Her reflection on how the Gardner-Webb community rallied around her was a moving reminder of what makes this university special. Faculty, staff, and students stepped in to offer support, care, and presence—and Rachel described it as her “second family” when she needed it most.

Her faith is central to how she approaches life, and her commitment to serving others flows naturally from it. Whether leading service projects, mentoring younger students, or envisioning a career in school counseling or social work, Rachel is charting a path that unites her heart for people with her professional calling.

Why Rachel’s Story Matters

In higher education, it’s easy to talk about transformation in abstract terms. Rachel puts a face and a voice to that transformation. She embodies the mission of Gardner-Webb: to prepare graduates not only for successful careers but for lives of purpose, faith, and service.

Her story reminds us that scholarships like the Tucker are not just financial awards—they are investments in students who will, in turn, invest in others.
